Armeria villosa subsp. bernisii

Notes: Armeria villosa subsp. bernisii is endemic to mountain ranges in Granada and Almería in southern Spain. In Andalucía six subspecies of Armeria villosa are recognized and all of them bear white flowers. Other subspecies are: Armeria villosa subsp. villosa, Armeria villosa subsp. longiaristata, Armeria villosa subsp. carratracens, Armeria villosa subsp. provillosa and Armeria subsp. alcaracensis. Flora ibérica considers Armeria villosa subsp. bernisii possibly to be hybrid from Armeria villosa subsp. longiaristata and Armeria filicaulis. In the Sierra Nevada both the subspecies bernisii as well as the subspecies longiaristata can be found. Armeria villosa subsp. longiaristata has lanceolate leaves with three to five nerves, the calyx is more than 8mm and this subspecies grows and on calcareous soils.

Paeonia broteroi

Notes: In the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain two types of Peony commonly grow together: Paeonia broteroi and Paeonia coriacea. The fruit of Paeonia broteroi is formed in more than two follicles (usually 4 or 5 seed heads) that are densely haired. The leaves of Paeonia broteroi are brighter green and the stems are more red compared to Paeonia coriacea. Lower leaves of Paeonia broteri generally have 17 or more leaflets.

Notes: A yellow daisy that is named after the Granada province where it can be found in the Sierra de Alfacar, Sierra de Almijara, Sierra de los Guájares and Sierra Nevada. Rothmaleria granatensis is a threatened species that is included in the Red List of the Vascular Flora of Andalucía

Echium albicans

Habitat: sandy and open areas, rocky dolomite, limestone slopes
Distribution: endemic of Andalusian mountains






Notes: The numerous hairs give Echium albicans a gray or white shade. Colours of the flowers range from pink to bright red and from violet to purple, depending on age and degree of withering. White-leaved Bugloss can invade roadsides of gravelly mountain roads and forest tracks in Andalusia.

Notes: Convolvulus boissieri is a tufted and cushion-forming plant. This endemic species of southern Spain is on the ´Lista Roja de la Flora Vascular de Andalucía´. It can be found in a number of provinces of Andalucïa, for example in Granada where it grows in the dolomite formations of the Trevenque area. Convolvulus boissieri was named after the Swiss botanist Pierre Edmond Boissier (1810-1885).

Notes: Erodium boissieri is one of the plants that is well adapted to extreme temperature changes and to the lack of a fertile, moist soil and high concentrations of minerals of the dolomite formations on the west side of the Sierra Nevada. It can only be found around Monte Trevenque (2083m) in southern Spain. This endemic species of the Sierra Nevada mountain range is on the ´Lista Roja de la Flora Vascular de Andalucía´. Erodium boissieri was named after the Swiss botanist Pierre Edmond Boissier (1810-1885).
