Gladiolus italicus

Flower: 25-45mm long, more or less pointing in one direction, 6-15 flowers to a spike
Leaves: 3-5, 5-17mm wide the upper narrower than the lower, irregularly veined
Habitat: cultivated land, particularly cereal fields, roadsides, rocky hillslopes, garrigue
Distribution: native to the mediterranean region (southwards of central France)






Notes: Italian Gladiolus is occasionally sold as a cut flower. It is quite similar to Gladiolus illyricus that grows for example in the Pyrenees. The anthers of Gladiolus italicus are clearly longer than the filaments which is not the case with Gladiolus illyricus.

Iris xiphium

Colour: blue or violet-purple, rarely all yellow or white, yellow crest on the falls
Flower: falls with an unwinged haft and oval blade, 45-46mm long
Leaves: grey-green, slender, 3-5mm wide, channelled, appearing in the autumn
Habitat: open pine forests, grassy habitats, scrub, sandy or rocky ground
Distribution: Iberian Peninsula, southern France, eastern Italia
Synonym: Iris bulbosa angustifoliis odorata





Notes: Iris xiphium is a rather slender, medium, bulbous perennial that has long been cultivated. It is the common florist´s iris. A popular hybrid (Iris tingitana × Iris xiphium) is known as Dutch Iris or Iris × hollandica. In the Netherlands a number of naturalized plants of Iris xiphium have been found close to Arnhem. In the province of Granada in southern Spain it can be found in the Sierra Nevada, Sierra Tejeda y Almijara, Sierra de la Mora and in the comarca de El Temple-Alhama de Granada.

Crocus nevadensis

Colour: cream, white or pale lilac, with dark veins
Leaves: 3-5, 1-2.5mm
Habitat: mountain meadows and stony places
Distribution: eastern and southern Spain, Morocco, northern Algeria
Synonyms: Crocus nevadensis Amo & Campo - Crocus algeriensis Baker - Crocus atlanticus Pomel





Notes: The Crocus nevadensis is an ´endemismo iberonorteafricano´ and one of the earliest flowers to burst through. It has the amazing ability to thrive in the late winter or early spring, even where there is still quite a lot of snow. In sheltered spots, it may start to bloom in February. Crocus nevadensis subsp. marcetii can be found in northern Spain, in the Pre-Pyrenees and Asturias at altitudes up to 1800m. In the Alps a similar White Crocus can be found called Crocus albiflorus (Crocus vernus subsp. albiflorus), a species that can form carpets and that grows at altitudes up to 2700m.
