Notes: Gentiana lutea is on the European Red List of vascular plants. It is the best known family member for its medicinal properties - it is used in the treatment of malarial fever. The name is a tribute to the second century BC Illyrian king Gentius who first discovered its virtues. Nowadays the Italians use the bitter root to flavour the spirit grappa. Prior to flowering it can be confused with the poisonous White Falsae Helleborine.
